Chapter Twenty

“Take this turn-off.” I point at the easy to miss road for the entrance into the park. Everyone has caught up to us with the help of our extended pull off on the side of the road to talk and Jack keeping us at a much slower speed.

The trees are dense here, just like a forest minus the influence of man should look like. I’m sure it’s a sight to see in the full throes of spring, the branches full and bursting with life. But the woods slumber as the winter begins its march across the lands.

This road is very well kept by the Kindred, well paved and smooth. The park ranger guardhouse is just up ahead, and although it is a real park ranger in the booth, whoever it is won’t be quite human. They will be Kindred, or at least someone who owes their allegiance to the Kindred.

We pull up and stop. Tabari gets out of his crossover and walks by us heading to the squat matchbox sized guardhouse. The air around him crackles with magic, he’s been spindling EM field into his Chi, something he does when he’s nervous.

I watch as Tabari and the female park ranger exchange pleasantries.

“So there’s one more thing I’ve been putting off to tell you.”

“What?” I ask not taking my eyes off of Tabari, waiting for any sign of danger. He wasn’t spindling that energy for nothing.

“I will be your Alpha slave.”

I do turn away from looking at Tabari then, “What?!”

“It’s already been decided, I will be the submissive to your dominant and Lucien will be the dominant to your submissive. It will remain this way as long as we are on your world. We will be your scales.”

“No Jack, you don’t want to be my slave, you have made that very clear.”

“Why, because I will not crawl for you Jaevia? That means I do not want to serve you?”

“That’s not what I mean.” Jack is so touchy when it comes to the subject of our BDSM relationship, the smallest thing will set him off.

I sigh, “You’ve been enjoying the dominant position for a while now; I don’t see why you should have to give that up. There will be plenty of slaves for me to choose from, ones that enjoy it.”

“When you come from your evenings with Acastus, angry, hurt, spewing with emotion, you may break contract with one of the slaves, go too far, it is a complication we can live without. For show, and at times of calm, you may have other slaves, but when the scales have been tipped it is I who will bear the cost to rebalance.”

I stare at him a long moment, “Why would you do this?”

“Because I love you Jaevia, and often times, love hurts.”

“But it shouldn’t.”

“But it always does, how else would you know it is love?”

What in Goddess’s name am I supposed to say to that? I just shake my head.

Tabari waves at the guard as he leaves the little matchbox hut, the young woman waves us through the check point and Jack hurries to pull forward.
